Director Guy Ritchie returned with his Sherlock Holmes sequel after the success of the first. This one centered around Professor James Moriarty played by Jared Harris getting revenge for the first movie.
It does a really good job showing not only the genius of Moriarty but his ruthlessness as well. On top of that Dr. Watson is going to leave him as well to get married.
That sets up the plot. One is the slow motion sequence to show things like what Holmes was planning on doing or what he had already done and was about to play out.
Another is the multiple disguises that Holmes uses. The best scenes are when Holmes and Moriarty meet. There is real tension between them yet they feel compelled to act like gentlemen and be polite.
Still it shows that these two men are serious about not only their rivalry but the desire for each to destroy the other. While replaying a lot of the techniques from the first movie this one is still enjoyable.
The year is , and Europe is on edge due to a number of assassinations and bombings. Each nation is blaming the other, and it seems that World War I will break out 23 years early.
Only Holmes realizes that Moriarity is behind it all, for reasons of his own. Moriarity attempts to destroy Holmes by targeting Irene Adler and the Watsons.
Fortunately, Holmes has new allies as well, including his older, smarter, even more eccentric brother Mycroft Stephen Fry and Madam Simsa Heron Noomi Rapace who leads a gang of revolutionaries once coopted by Moriarity but now fighting against him.
The pacing is faster, the scriptwriting more crisp, the humor more incisive, the action less pyrotechnic. If the film has a relative weakness, it is in the female leads.
Kelly Reilly and Noomi Rapace both give well-acted performances in inconsequential "pretty girl" roles. This is really a men's buddy film nonpareil.
Downey and Law, having given us the backstory of their characters in the original film, have incredible chemistry together as Holmes and Watson, and are able to explore in depth the complicated, sometimes ridiculous, often rivalrous relationship between the two men.

As before, the mix of CGI and evocative locations make for good visuals - and that's The Waverley paddle-steamer that appears mid-way in the film.

If you are old school and like the old Basil Rathbone films, then this may not be for you. It's modern and exciting, comical and smart. A completely different take on Sherlock.
