The Lizzie Borden Chronicles (Trailer)

But if you don't have the patience to sit through one episode. Then this show is not for you. The Lizzie Borden Chronicles has little to offer.

The characterizations are flat and lifeless. Lizzie is not portrayed as someone effected by emotional or other issues that may have made her a killer.

Instead, what we get is a shallow depiction, that paints Borden as little more than a superficially charming, stereotypical, sociopath. What really drags this series down, however, is the glee it takes in grotesque, sensationalist violence.

The opening episode revels in blood and gore, with a cheesy, rocking soundtrack thrown in to further cheapen the whole miserable experience this shabby series represents.

Just as aggravating is the annoyingly choppy camera work, that I'm guessing is supposed to represent a chaotic, disordered mind.

A more subtle approach would have achieved far more. I'd like to give the script for Lizzie Borden forty whacks but a rating of one out of ten will have to suffice instead.

Love it. Christina Ricci is awesome. All the cast play their characters so well. Hopefully it'll be renewed for another season.

I have a theory of what might happen but I'll keep that to myself. This show only gets better. I'm glad Christina decided to play the part of Lizzy Bordin.

I watched the movie and out of all the "Lizzy Bordins" I think she played it the best. I can not say enough good things about this show. All the actors just seem to flow together, so much that you would almost forget that you are watching a TV show.

The actors make the scenes seem so convincing. I loved this show, for the period it was set in, the sets, costumes, the structure of the plot, just good acting, really Christina Ricci does a fabulous job playing the 'innocent' crazy lady, had my laughing as well as had me sitting on the edge of my seat watching for what will happen next and waiting for the next episode.

My husband doesn't usually like this type of show as it's one that requires someone to sit and watch as well as listen to the script and pick up on all the smaller details but even he got really into this show.

Now, it's no GOT but it holds it's own and I recommend it. I LOVE this show. What sucks is that no one knows about it. Everyone I talk to about this show has no idea about it.

Then when they watch it the absolutely love it. I think what's hurting the rating of this show is the fact that it's not advertised as much.

Mainly because not too many people watch lifetime. If Lizzie Borden merchandise was sold in a store like HotTopic then this show would probably blow up.

I can see this show being really big if it was advertised the right way. Also, it's hard to find on the lifetime web site.

I literally have to do so much navigating to find the show. As a web designer and graphic designer, I know that of people have to do a lot of navigating on your site to find something then they tend to give up and leave the site.

This is something that the company should figure out how to fix. After the series ended and they stopped advertising the show which the should never do.

All shows should be advertised year round I couldn't find the show on their site at all without doing a lot of searching.

Not good. If the show was advertised like Bates Motel which the two shows are very good and comparable then the show would do a lot better.

I have read the story about Lizzy Borden. I love the story. Murder Mysteries are awesome. I was on the edge of my seat all through the show.

I love the characters, never knew they had a brother. I just hope that the rest will be as entertaining as this one. Not so keen on the music tho, doesn't seem to fit this era very well.

I hope that if Lizzy buys the new house, there will be much more to come with her sister as well. I would also like to hear about the "dead baby.

She pulverized him. I look forward to some good story lines in the future. The character fit the bill really well.

After watching the first episode of this series, I am at a complete loss to know why the producers feel I should watch it. Sure, it begins with a flashy, MTV style that is at least different, and there's a lot of gory violence for those who like it, but what's the story?

Mysterious investigator, obstacles that Lizzie deals with in her special way will that be the entire series? It was also just quite boring. There's a nice scene near the beginning with some little girls running from Lizzie, but that was the only time in the whole episode I was entertained.

None of the events are even vaguely close to things that happened in Lizzie Borden's life. The show starts up after Lizzie was acquitted of the murder of her father and stepmother, and apart from being ostracised by the community, I can't find anything suggestion that the events are true.

I'm not sure why they bothered using Lizzie Borden's name as the story they're selling has no bearing on her life. Did I mentioned the crappy camerawork?

The fact that this story took place twenty miles down the road from where I live, there is one striking element that quickly got my attention.

The accents of the characters do not represent the regions' unique variety of northeastern speech. I realize that this story occurred one hundred and thirty years ago but the accents in the mini series reflect a variety that is more homogenized than it would have been in Fall River Massachusetts in this period.

Where are the fishermen? Where are the Portuguese and french speaking immigrants that started moving into this area to work in textile industry mills?

I do think the setting recreation is done well. Costumes are impeccable. Houses in the series seem period and the furnishings are accurate as they can be.

The stories are interesting but a bit fanciful. I cannot believe that a psychopathic woman would possess such social power and sway.

Her ostracized status would have kept her out of the limelight of Fall River society. I didn't make it past the first 20 minutes, so this review is more an explanation about what put me off, rather than a balanced review of the whole series.

I'm disappointed that this was ruined for me so early on, as it had the potential to be really good. All the elements were there, so far as I could tell.

However, what worked well in the film "A Knight's Tale", failed miserably here. I'm talking about the now way overused anachronistic music tracks that play throughout.

Many period shows seem to be employing this technique now, using modern music in the background of costume dramas, and it is no longer cool.

It is merely a distraction. And when the music is poorly chosen, and played way too loudly and intrusively, it serves merely to blast away the viewers ability to suspend disbelief and immerse themselves in the story.

What a waste. And then to wastefully bring in major historical bad asses like Tom Horn and Bat Masterson is almost so stupid that it's good, but not really, just mostly bad.

Everything and everyone is thrown together. Oh, and did I mention the murky photography, crap music, waste of good actors?

Sign me up! I was sorely disappointed. However, that doesn't mean it's not entertaining - just that a large portion of the entertainment comes from bemusement at the show's desperate, flashy production, thin characters and ludicrous, self-defeating plot.

From the first few seconds you know the territory this show is staking out: this is an edgy modern crime show in the most stereotypical sense - over edited, shaky cam, quick cuts, melodramatic camera angles and music.

It's hugely jarring in contrast with the period setting, and completely destroys any potential subtlety that the show could have.

That would have been an impediment, if I felt that they were even attempting this. Lizzie Borden, the character, is hugely disappointing.

I don't think it's a spoiler to say that she just kills people left, right and center almost constantly - it's pretty evident within the first few episodes.

Each time, the reason for the kill is set up in such a contrived, obvious way that you feel that you know exactly what is going to happen.

And then it happens. The writers do have to show some creativity in coming up with ways in which this tiny woman kills one person after another.

I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt here - some are plausible, many are ludicrous, but since these set pieces are apparently the payoff of the series, I guess we can roll with it.

It does push the boundaries of credibility that none of these victims manages to physically overwhelm this diminutive person. Also unlikely is how a woman who was famously on trial for murder could be surrounded by suspicious deaths, and yet get away with it every time.

It's a creaky contrivance, but it's the sort of thing that could still support a fun, twisty show. But Lizzie's one-dimensional character isn't interesting and offers little in the way of an opening to allow us to empathize with her.

This is the age of the anti-hero, and shows like Dexter and Hannibal prove that it's possible for viewers to get into the heads of murderers, and even care about them.

Lizzie just isn't that compelling. It doesn't help that most of what we learn about her motivations is delivered in B-movie style monologues to dead people her parents' graves or about-to-be-dead people her victims.

She's pretty close to the archetype of a cackling villain. And she is largely so calm and smug looking that I found myself not really caring either way about whether she was found out or not.

I've liked Ricci elsewhere, but I don't think she does anything at all with this hopeless character. Lizzie's sister Emma Clea DuVall is a more interesting character.

There's a certain amount of ambiguity about what she suspects about Lizzie's activities. She is well portrayed by Clea DuVall and exhibits a wide range of sincere emotions, which is actually a rare thing for characters in this show.

Sadly, the stupidity of the plot is too much for this to survive in the later episodes. Cole Hauser plays Lizzie's main antagonist, a Pinkerton who has come into town to investigate her.

He is not a particularly memorable character. That can be said about the majority of characters here. Jonathan Banks is good in his role as a crime kingpin, but I think that's because of Jonathan Banks rather than the role.

The plot of this show repeats as follows: some threat appears to Lizzie, or some wrong is done that she feels she has to address. Lizzie kills the person involved, resolving the issue.

As a side note, it's hard to get interested in any new side characters for this reason My names - Urggghh dies ".

At several points in this show, I found myself realizing that there wasn't really any story going on. There's very little suspense that Lizzie's deeds will catch up with her because any time such developments begin, they're quickly resolved with a murder or two.

In fact, at one point, close to the end of the season, they literally run out of story, and do a sort of reboot.

All within the space of eight episodes. The overabundance of twitchy, glitchy editing no doubt arises out of the producers' insecurity about the show's basic lack of substance, but I can't say the show is altogether boring.

It's kind of interesting to see what new ludicrous ways the writers can spin the same material. I would imagine it's perfect for watching while you're doing something else.

I'm just disappointed that an interesting historical character like Lizzie Borden - a woman who most likely committed a gruesome murder, for reasons we don't fully understand, and got away with it - has been given such a figurative drooling hunchback of a fictional representation.

I'm not expecting Breaking Bad, but a bit of complexity and empathy would have been nice. Unlike Borden, I don't think this hack job survives judgement.

The plot started out well but I found the story grew over involved and dramatized to ridiculous lengths. I did not care for the choice of leading lady, Christina Ricci and felt she pulled away from the true character of a person who would be in that position by over dramatizing the character and the series would have faired well if the role had been played by someone who showed more emotion in their eyes and less threat of "constant in your face" attitude".

I feel little effort was made. Her elements did not blend well. I did like the rest of the cast. I personally loved the music choices and felt the filming was done well despite some lengthy dark scenes.

I thought Miss Duvall did an excellent job and fit the part. This is just my opinion. We are all entitled and the next persons opinion could be totally different.

I lived with a person whose personality was flawed like Lizzies and they tend to see saw their personalities. This portrayal was too straight and narrow with little shift.

If they do a new season, I hope she works on her part a little more. I know it was tough, but it was the leading role.

Beauty only goes so far. This show, at least in my opinion, deserves a season two. It has so many good reviews and a pretty high rating, all it needs is more viewers.

Lifetime is killing me right now! They have not said no or go to having more seasons. I can't wait to find out and I hope its a go!

Lifetime produced Lizzie Borden Took an Ax , a speculative television film with Christina Ricci portraying Borden, which was followed by The Lizzie Borden Chronicles , a limited series and sequel to the television film which presents a fictional account of Borden's life after the trial.

In , Supernatural aired an episode entitled "Thin Lizzie". They originally suspect that the ghost of Lizzie Borden is the one responsible for the murders, but then discover that the murderer isn't her.

The events of the murders and the trial, with actors portraying the people involved, have been re-created for a number of documentary programs.

In , the radio program Unsolved Mysteries broadcast a minute dramatization of "The Lizzie Borden Case", [] with a possible solution presented that the murders were committed during a botched robbery attempt by a tramp, who then escaped.

The story was published in posthumously in the collection American Ghosts and Old World Wonders. Miss Lizzie , a novel by Walter Satterthwait, takes place thirty years after the murders and recounts an unlikely friendship between Borden and a child, and the suspicions that arise from a murder.

Lizzie Borden is mentioned in the posthumously published Agatha Christie novel Sleeping Murder published in , written in In it, the main character Miss Marple discusses a potential murder with another character, Dr Haydock, who talks about people who have committed murder and got away with it, saying "It was not proven in the case of Madeleine Smith and Lizzie was acquitted—but many people believe both of those women were guilty.

I could name you others. They never repeated their crimes—one crime gave them what they wanted and they were content. Verstraete's novel Lizzie Borden, Zombie Hunter , Lizzie's parents are depicted as having become zombies and this is the reason Lizzie attacked them.
