After Mitch dies, Adam's fear of his potential death and future surface as he is subsequently informed that he needs to undergo surgery.
The night before, Adam argues with an intoxicated Kyle, demanding that he drive even though he cannot. After a near miss , Adam breaks down and berates Kyle for seemingly not taking his condition seriously and using it for his own gain.
Adam calls Katherine and tells her that he wishes she was his girlfriend, but also says he is tired and just wants his cancer to be over.
That night, Adam stays at Kyle's and finds a book entitled Facing Cancer Together from their first trip to a bookstore where Kyle picked up the shop clerk—filled with notes, highlighted paragraphs and turned-down pages.
He realizes that Kyle sincerely cares and has been simply continuing to treat him the same since his diagnosis.
The next day, Kyle drops Adam off, who embraces Kyle for being a good friend and apologizes for the previous night.
After Adam says his farewells to family, he undergoes the surgery. During the wait, Katherine goes to the waiting room and inadvertently meets Adam's family and Kyle.
After the surgery, Kyle, Diane, and Katherine are told that although the bone degradation was worse than they had thought, the tumor was removed successfully, and that Adam will recover.
Some time later, Adam is getting ready for a date with Katherine, while Kyle encourages him and cleans the incision on Adam's back from the surgery.
The doorbell rings and Adam lets Katherine inside. After Kyle leaves, Katherine asks, "Now what? The screenplay is loosely based on the experience of screenwriter Will Reiser , friend of the film's co-lead, Seth Rogen.
The film was going to be called I'm with Cancer before it was announced that this was a working title. James McAvoy was going to play the lead role before he left the film due to personal reasons, as he was afraid of missing the birth of his first child, and was replaced by Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

I love the final scene of the movie between two characters that really caps it off well. The movie is really about how everyone has such a tough time accepting bad news like cancer, and Adam's mother played by Anjelica Huston has the hardest of any it seems.
The moment with his father before surgery is where it all begins but this one's a tearjerker with a great ending.
The special features and director's commentary are all really informative and fun. All of the guys riffing on the commentary for the whole of the film is quite a treat.
Blu-ray came in great condition. Highly recommended dramedy with tons of great talent who continue to shine today. The film is loosely inspired by Reiser's own experience with cancer, with Rogen's character Kyle based on Rogen himself.
First and foremost, the overall tone distinguishes this film from others like it. I appreciate that most movies involving a terminally ill individual maintain a serious and depressive mood through their entirety, but this does little to capture the complexity of which a beautiful life can be made of.
In between laughs which, I would argue there are more laughs than tears here are moments where the gravity of Adam's Gordon-Levitt momentarily takes the center of attention and keeps the other characters and the audience from being over-zealous or naive in their good-intending optimism.
Building on to my last point, it is also appreciate the variety of behaviors and reactions the characters have in this film upon hearing that Adam has cancer with a low survival rate.
Adam's mother becomes overbearing and insists on "taking the wheel" in regards to her son's health. Kyle reacts in a relatively ambiguous way; he seems to care very much about his friend's health, but he still try makes other nuances Like going on dates and "getting laid" a normal part of his relationship and interactions with Adam.
There are plenty of movies I have seen where a character's support system has members that seem to be mimicking the same and, often expected reaction to nws regarding a serious illness, and I applaud the director in taking this specific attribute in an uncommon direction.
As much as I enjoyed the composition of this film, it was absolutely impossible for me to accept the unquestionably unethical nature of Anna Kendrick's character Katherine, Adam's therapist.
I am all too familiar with the process of professional boundaries being blurred, but the nature in which it occurred in this film was absolutely ridiculous.
Touching not sexually, mind you, but touching a patient because "you want them to feel comfortable" during their first session with you?
Giving a patient your personal cell phone number "just in case" they need someone to talk to???
Let's not even get in to the fact that they have an intimate relationship shortly after Adam gets out of surgery. People that are unfamiliar with this field may be tickled by the cutesy exchanges between Adam and Katherine, but just so we're clear: I absolutely loathed just that.
Overall, this is a good watch despite including one specific quality that I just could not stomach. I would recommend!

Outspoken and blustering he non the less is committed to helping his friend through the pain and onto recovery.
The nervous and charming young Therapist played by Anna Kendrick is still studying for her Doctorate and cannot help breaching the Patient-Doctor gap, to become Adam's Joseph Gordon-Levitt girl friend after his successful operation.
Adding to this comedy with serious undertones, Bryce Dallas Howard plays the Father with Dementia who thinks that he is having an affair with his own wife, Adam's Mother, played by Angelica Huston.
I love this movie and wanted to have it, so I got a perfect item for a great price. He just needs the perfect movie to become widely known and respected Report abuse.
I liked this film. It is about a character who is sensible, waits for the green man before crossing the road,exercises does not drink or smoke or the such, mainly stays in.
But yet still he gets cancer, which conflicts with his lifestyle of being sensible, making it difficult for him to logically process this.
There is no reasoning he can hang onto for it occuring, or a set reaction for him to take. I suppose one negetive point about it to me was that occasionally I found the best friend character a bit annoying with his constant steriotypical self absorbed sort of wants - a loud sex wanting character lacking sensitivity to the situation.
He wanted the main character to use his illness for sexual gain. Far too many comedies rely on a character loudly talking about sex to get by and upon initally watching i was worried that it would progress into that.
However later that character was developed further. And the dynamic of the relationships was better. After a while I was even a little glad that there was this non sensible best friend in order to provide a lack of sensibility to have fun with.
A person of which this sensible main character could turn to for non sensible reactions to being ill. The film was interesting and had a good cast.
The main character was not self absorbed thus making the other characters have personalities rather than just be fillers round him, it was realstic in places and mildly humourous in others - but still takles a major illness so is not hugely a comedy.
One person found this helpful. I'm going to get this out of the way first and foremost; does Rogen do anything other than the socially-awkward, pot-smoking slacker gig?
Nonetheless, it is a nicely mawkish and heart-warming film; and it will have you biting your lip on occasions damn you, I will not cry at anything with Seth Rogen in it.
