Der Film spiele zwar spezifisch im Zweiten Weltkrieg oder , so Schwentke weiter, aber er sei generell auch ein Film über einen Zustand der Welt. Trotz der fehlenden schriftlichen Vollmacht, wurde ihm geglaubt. Dazu musste er auf Anordnung des Lagervorstehers Friedrich Hansen, einem jährigen Justizbeamten, von einem Lagerbeauftragten begleitet werden, wozu sich Schütte bereiterklärte. Herold und seine entmenschte Rotte richten ein Massaker an, keine Untat ist grausam genug.
Er berichtete von einem wachen Zwanzigjährigen, der forsch den Raum betrat und respektvoll die Hacken zusammenschlug. Polen, Franzosen, Belgier und Holländer. Director Robert Schwentke shoots in black and white, yet the story is strictly black, giving little insight into the cruel, impressively coolheaded Herold Max Hubacher except that he's incensed at the German retreat.
Hubacher's performance is a masterful physical feat. April Wolfe. It's a profoundly disturbing film, full of striking images.
Ed Potton. Philip De Semlyen. Peter Bradshaw. Though he belabors the obvious and sensationalizes the carnage and sadism, Schwentke is dealing with some relevant issues.
Peter Keough. Schwentke's made one of the best films of his career here, but it still winds up a superficial exercise. Dominic Griffin.
When it is all said and done, it is the kind of film that one can easily shrug off when it is over, something that one might think would be impossible given the source material.
Peter Sobczynski. Nick Johnston. Utterly enthralling from minute one, The Captain is a wild ride with an incredibly bonkers end-credit sequence and, though a difficult watch at times, is well worth a look.
Adam Patterson. A super supporting cast of black comedy experts launch this tragedy solidly into the realm of powerful social commentary.
Ron Wilkinson. The Captain is a hedonistic war drama which delves into the realms of comedy and absurdity in order to enhance the horror of Herold's deeds.

LOL I went into this cold, I had no idea it was based on a true story and I thought it was going to be a comedy or that Herold was the good guy.
It was fucking weird seeing the feldpolizei as kind of the good guys, arresting him and his sonderkommandos after the orgy.
I had no idea what it was going to be either. Thought it was quite a swell film indeed. There were some swell Teutonic Titties in there, that's for sure!

The soldier went from being a scared and afraid deserter to being a mass murderer in a relatively short period of time, all thanks to his perceived power given to him by his loyal followers and status, even if it's entirely fabricated.
