Decent acting, though the kid was cringe at times. Completely falls apart the last 20 minutes. Some VERY cool ideas and I honestly would recommend to watch this if it was free on netflix if you were a horror fan.
But I wouldn't recommend to pay money for it. It had one of those endings where there is a cliff-hanger. A "how are they gonna get out of this alive!?
And then cut to: "we not gonna show you but they are fine. Trust us. It makes sense just don't think about it.
Don't cheat the audience. Don't put your characters in a crazy cool awesome dangerous situation and then just TADA us and not show how they escape.
The director did a good job of holding your interest and keeping the movie suspenseful enough for you to pay attention to what was happening.
I don't want to give away the ending, but there is a twist and then another twist that you expect to happen but doesn't. My main question is - did the townspeople know what was happening?
It seems like at least one character did but didn't want to admit it , but I wasn't sure about the others. Plus, once the mother saw that crazy hole in the ground near her house, don't you think she would have asked some of her coworkers about it?
I know I would have. Anyway - both of the main actors did a terrific job. And the atmosphere and the music kept me on the edge of my seat.
This movie could have taken place in under 30 minutes. What a waste of time. Should have trusted the review of 3 starts. I want my 90 minutes back!
I don't know why I keep watching horror movies that get less than a 6. I kick myself every time. This is a slow-moving film with no new ideas and a muddled plot.
And what was the thing with burying people's heads while they're still attached? Who does that? Monsters, apparently, but we never find out what kind or where they came from.
The titular hole in the ground looks like a meteor crater so perhaps we're supposed to believe they came from outer space. Who knows? This film sure doesn't explain anything.
The only reason I gave it two stars instead of one is that the little boy does a pretty decent acting job. There aren't a lot of surprises in this one, but that isn't really necessary; this isn't a buckets of blood and jump scare film.
It's a brilliantly-acted take on old lore in a modern setting. The sense that the older characters have a better -- but still imperfect -- understanding of what's truly happening is a great example about how understanding of local folklore and superstition evolve from generation to generation, but the movie deftly avoids the trap of clubbing the viewer over the head with it.
Intelligently written, and incredibly creepy. Well worth a watch. What would you do if you suspected a family member might not be who they appear to be?

Well done. The young actor James Quinn Markey that plays Chris, the son, is quite brilliant. There are a few holes in the story.
Like where did the Hole come from and the Des character, how did he finally come to terms with what his wife believed I enjoyed it.
Aside from those two niggles I gave is a well deserved 5 stars. Amazon has issues with getting really good horror most are more horrifically bad rather than scary horror LOL so when I find one I really like I need to review it so others know I approve and liked it enough!
