Hellboy II took a completely different tone from the first one. The original Hellboy movie was a dark story based upon the occult.

Obviously including elves pointed to the fantasy theme. The movie poses a dilemma for Hellboy about whether he will stand with humanity who he was created to destroy or with the elves who want to get rid of humanity to restore balance in nature.

Centuries ago the elves and human signed a truce. What happened afterward was that people created a commercial society where the environment was to be exploited to create wealth.

Prince Nuada hated that and wanted to re-assert the power of the elves and stop the destruction of the Earth.

His argument was the ends justified the means. The film did continue with the jokes from the first. Of course Guillermo Del Toro who made the movie loves monsters and he got to put plenty of them into this film from the small Tooth Fairies to the Golden Army to the Troll Market.

Ron Perlman really embodied the character with both the tough guy persona, the jokes and his soft side as well. One person found this helpful. I was pleasantly surprised with this film.

Guillermo Del Toro really did a great job bringing this sequel to life and addressed my biggest complaint with the first film in that he gave the characters some serious development in this sequel compared to the original.

We finally get to connect with the characters of the film and learn about them in ways we definitely didn't get to in the first film.

The CGI in this film is as great as the first, and the acting is just as superb, but there is one complaint I have with this film. The ending.

The movie has a great plot and a great climax of the story but the way it ends leaves it open for a third installment, but so far we have nothing.

I find movies that set up a hole for a third installment, but never fill it to be disappointing. It feels as though there is a section of Hellboy's story that we will never see on the silver screen because there isn't a third movie, but who knows, maybe someday with all these continuations and reboots and remasters running around nowadays.
